OK i would have searched and looking for any info on that i could have gut every time i try to search i get "permission denied" from the forums.

So i'm running vista 32bit and GW runs ok, but i would say that 6 out of 10 times i start up GW it has to run the "repairing data archive" and then i have to download everything again, including loosing my settings in the game. I've tried running as administrator, i've tried running as xp sp2 compatibility mode. I'm not sure what else to do. Clearly the procedure of defraging the dat file isn't goint to fix this problem, because its constantly changing size, if i get repairing data archive the dat file goes from 1.4gig or larger down to 141mb!!

Please help. Unfortunately GW doesn't have actualy forums for us to use. So i'm here, thanks for any help in advance guys.

Delete your gw.dat file in your guildwars folder.

You have 2 options from here. You can either play the game as you normally would, downloading all the files on the way(it takes a bloody long time entering each area)

OR

go to start-->run-->(your guildwars game folder)-->Guild Wars

When youve got it in the text bar

go to the end of it, and type in -image after the words. This will download ALL files before you play the game, it will take a very long time, but you wont have to wait when you join each area, its less of a hassle if you have time to let it download everything.

After that, make sure you dont corrupt your file in anyway.

1) properly log out everytime you leave
2) prevent your computer from sudden restarts/shutdowns that could tear away bits from your gw.dat corrupting it.

As krypt said, delete the Gw.Dat file, and/or reinstall the whole game, if you chose to reinstall the whole game make sure to save your screens/templates

If you’re pretty sure that you’re running a clean system free of viruses and spyware, what I would do is clear the archive. Windows XP and Vista both use something called system restore points to continually back up files and settings on your computer. When something changes or becomes corrupted due to viruses or other malicious software, the archive changes, thus receiving the “repairing data archive” message. Therefore the archive itself is capable of duplicating the virus/spyware or other corrupted information, so even if you remove the problem with a virus scanner or other method, the archive remains corrupted. It will then constantly try to repair itself from what’s currently running on your system.

If you rely on using restore points a lot on your computer to stay functioning, then I wouldn’t try this. If not, what I would do after making sure your computer is completely clean of viruses and spyware, maybe even running a check disk on boot before clearing the archive. Then go into your system properties, turn off system restore, restart the computer, then if you want, turn system restore back on to create a fresh restore point, clearing the previously corrupted archive. Once it begins archiving again from new, the messages shouldn’t pop up so frequently. Or, you could just turn system restore off, and not see the messages again. Doing so will leave you without a system restore point to roll back to if needed however.

After clearing the data archive, do a fresh install of guild wars, and that should fix the issue.
